wearing belts over 40, fashion over 40

OK girls, I have noticed a definite trend on the internet and social media. Now, I love the flowing top over a pair of skinny jeans as much as the next girl. However, I fear that some women over 40 have convinced themselves that this is the only silhouette that works at middle age. I would like to make a case for wearing belts after 40.

Wearing Belts After 40

I totally get it…when you find something that works you just go with it and the flowing top over slim pants is a look that works for a lot of us girls. But, it can run the risk of becoming a uniform of sorts.  Belts can add rich detail and unique flair to any outfit. The key to wearing belts after 40 is finding widths and designs that are figure flattering.

Wearing Belts

  1. Obi Belt – These fabric belts are made of fabric that is wider in the front and narrower in the back, so they can be cinched in without feeling uncomfortable. These belts help create an hourglass shape. Just make sure not to wear them too close under a larger bust.
  2. Belt With Partial Tuck – This style works perfectly for over-sized tops that can look pretty shapeless when worn out.
  3. Thin Colored Belt – Add a pop of color to your outfit with a thin belt. Again I used a partial tuck to soften the visual line.
  4. Match Belt To Clothing – Matching belts add definition to the waist without drawing too much attention.
  5. Emphasize Waist Under A Longer Shirt Or Vest – Choose a belt that adds some color and visual interest…then, layer something longer over the top.
  6. Wide Belt Over Bulky Clothing – Belts add needed definition to the waist when wearing bulky material or multiple layers.
  7. Leather Belt With Details – A quality leather belt elevates the style of a simple jeans and top combo.

I love belts and am always on the lookout for a new color or style. I just thrifted the cutest little polka dot belt and cannot wait to wear it. Your obi is beautiful! Thanks for linking up with Fabulous Friday, Shellie!

I’ve always struggled with belts except the leather belt with jeans.
I’m a size 8 but always feel like it doesn’t look right on me (any other sort). Maybe because of my over 40 gut. Maybe I’ll try some of your suggestions. Thanks!

Hi Patty…I totally get you that the standard straight around the middle look doesn’t always work, but I think the partial tuck can really work to solve that. I’m so glad you stopped by!

  3. Thanks for linking up to Top of the World Style. Looks like a great collection. I love belts too

Another great post Shellie. Belts are a great way of jazzing up an outfit no matter what age you are. I’m always on the look out for something different when I’m browsing in my local charity shops. My ensemble for NYE hinged massively on the right belt – it really made all the difference to me.

I’m not over 40 but I AM a fan of fun remixing in a closet. These ideas for styling a belt are stellar! They got my creative juices flowing. Thanks!

Great sum up on belts. I hardly have any, but this makes me realise I must get some. Such an easy way to change an outfit!

    • Shellie Bowdoin says:

Absolutely Lorna Mai…belts are also a great way to add a pop of color, which is essential for a colour queen link you 😉

  8. Terri says:

Great post, Shellie! After 40 I could still wear belts like you suggested. Once I hit 50 and the big M, my pear body turned into an apple and belts do not work at all. I’ll stick with my long tunics and leggings for now 🙂

  9. Yes to belts! My belt collection has really grown the past few years, as they can be the perfect finishing touch to an outfit. I have also made a couple of obi belts by sewing two wide men’s ties together.
