Today is a very special day…we are celebrating the one-year anniversary of the My Refined Style Fashion Linkup…woot, woot! What a fabulous time we’ve had; coming together each month to rock our over-40 style.

How I Refine My Style

To celebrate the day I thought I would share the three essential elements that refine my style.

1. I Know My Colors

how I refine my style, I know my colors

I am a true winter, which means I wear clear, unmuted colors. In fact, the more brilliant the color is, the more it suits my natural coloring. And yes, I wear A LOT of black. Again, pure black jives well with my coloring. Red is my signature color.

How about you…do you know your coloring? Wearing color over 40 immediately warms up your complexion.

2. I Know My Shapes

how I refined my style, I know my shapes

I know my body, so I choose clothing styles to accentuate my best features. Although, I don’t seem like your typical petite I am actually short-waisted. I often shop for my tops in the petite section to keep the hemline from falling too low.

I also like to wear circle skirts. Circle skirts flatter many body shapes. I find the most flattering length is just below the knee cap. Likewise, I’m a major fan of the pencil skirt, which looks best when it tapers in below the knee. And oh, how I love a great pair of slim legged slacks!

3. I Know My Vibe

how I refine my style, I know my vibe

I admire a myriad of different styles on other women, but I know my vibe and stick with what works for me. I prefer classic lines and feminine shapes. Often, I like to mix soft and hard elements.

When it comes to jewelry, I like metals and natural materials. Dainty jewelry doesn’t seem to work for me, so the bigger or clunkier it is, the more I like it. And, I’ve learned to rock my reading glasses over the last several years. Hey…if you’ve got to have them, they might as well be fabulous!

My Refined Style Celebrates One Year

The other hosts and I wanted to mark this anniversary edition of the My Refined Style Linkup with a special combined post. Each host picked a picture she thought best reflects her refined style. Also, we’re excited to introduce Trina as our new co-host.

My Refined Style Celebrates One Year

Monthly Fashion Over-40 Linkup.

This month, the My Refined Style Linkup celebrates our one-year anniversary! We wanted to do a little something special, so we are each sharing the elements that refine and define our own personal styles! We are also happy to welcome a new host, Trina from Tea Time With Trina.

Shellie’s Style

I am a major fan of black, not because it’s easy, but because it’s honestly one of my most flattering colors. I prefer classic lines, but I like to mix things up with interesting textures and details. Then, I like to add just a touch of edginess to my outfits to keep things fresh and current.

Jessica’s Style

Here is an outfit that best describes my personal style. I love color, and feminine styles. The shape of this dress is fitted, I love a vintage inspired look with the color and v back. Dressing for my shape is part of my style as well as wearing shoes that are comfortable and stylish. The block heel, vintage inspired, is a versatile shoe! I do love my floral patterns as well!

Dawn’s Style

I think this look reflects my personal style.  Here I’m wearing all my favorite things: flared jeans, cool shades, and kick a** boots! I’m also loving revisiting the deep burgundy lipstick shades and black chokers of the 90’s!

Patti’s Style

Here is a recent picture that I thinks expresses features of My Refined Style. I like to mix dressy with casual, have a fun and funky piece as the eye-catcher, and use jewelry to help define the look. I always want my shoes to have a little personality, like these black booties. And I like to incorporate trends (e.g., cropped trousers) with classic silhouettes.

Cherie’s Style

This particular outfit I saw on Zara’s website and just knew I had to have it.  It was just so different, but yet so elegant and sophisticated.  I love to be comfortable in what I wear so this was right up my alley.  Pairing it with metallic slippers or slides seemed to be the perfect mix.  Casual elegance.  I have a difficult time defining my style, but people have described it to me as just that, casual elegance.

Andrea’s Style

This look captures and defines my style which is often a blend of dressy with a casual piece mixed in or visa versa. There is something about mixing casual and more dressy pieces and soft fabrics that makes me feel polished yet more comfortable. For me, being refined means wearing things you love but always feeling like yourself and exuding confidence.

Trina’s Style (Our new co-host)

This bohemian style dress, which I’ve layered over a peasant blouse, and paired with lace up flats definitely defines my everyday style.  I’m not afraid to layer, I feel comfortable running around in flats (even at my wonderful height of 5’3″) I am more likely to throw on a dress on any given day for just about any given occasion because it makes me happy!  I feel truly confident in this little number and just a bit unique which is what makes us all that much more refined.

Hi Emma. Also, have you noticed that there is not an abundance of red clothing available in stores? I guess it’s not a color everyone feels confident with, but I think more should.

  11. I love how you analyzed your style by colors, shapes, & vibe! You truly know what works for you!

Has it been one year already? It seems as if this link up just started. I like your point of knowing your own body. I can look at something and just know if it will work/not work for me. That is so true!

    • Shellie Bowdoin says:

Hi Amy, there I times when I wish something would work for me, but I have learned not to force things.

  13. Congrats on the one year anniversary of this link up! All you ladies are stunning and such an inspiration.

  14. Congrats on 1 year! I need to look back and see how old my link up is with Jill… It does help to know your style, I still feel like I’m figuring out my individual style at times.

  15. Wow one year Shellie – congratulations! My link up is one year old too, I didn’t realise we started them at the same time…?!

It’s great knowing your own style, if asked I’d say I don’t know mine because I tend to throw anything together – but then I’ve been told I *do* have a distinctive style. Maybe it’s the haphazardness that’s my signature style, haha! You always look so elegant, and BOY do you have a fabulous pair of legs!

Thanks for hosting, here’s to many more years of your link up 🙂

    • Shellie Bowdoin says:

Hi Catherine! I remembered it was your anniversary too because I had originally hoped you would join our happy band of hosts. That’s when you told me you were just getting started with your own linkup.

  16. Love your style! You know exactly what works for you, and it shows! Thank you for hosting, and congrats on the one year. xx
